“Two weeks ago I thought I was going to lose my child. Tito [my son] fell sick in the evening and had very high fever. It came suddenly because in the day he was playing and all but at dinner time he refused to eat and started being very hot. He felt sleepy and I let him sleep but when I was checking him a bit later he was so hot that I got worried.

The hospital is very far from here and I was alone home with my three children and I didn’t know where to leave the children. Also, I didn’t have any money for transport to go to the hospital. Then I remembered that in our village there is a [Community Health Worker who] is also my neighbor. So I ran to her that very night. I carried Tito on my back because he couldn’t walk.

Juliet opened the door even though it was late and I told her how worried I was and she gave Tito a malaria test straight away. She diagnosed my child and found out he had malaria and he was vomiting.  And then she escorted us to the hospital because he was vomiting. At the hospital they put my child on drip and a few days after he recovered. Juliet stayed there all night with us and came back home with us the following day.

 In our villages the clinics are expensive…But Community Health Worker Juliet she can only charge you six shillings and she gives you the medicine. Juliet is so important to our village. I don’t know what I would have done if Juliet had not been there.”
