Catherine Zoungrana, a CHW in Burkina Faso, employs digital tools to transform child healthcare

Catherine Zoungrana is a community health worker (CHW)-called ASBC (Agent de Santé à Base Communautaire) in Burkina Faso- based in Ziniaré.  

 She is supported by Living Goods and is located 7 km from the nearest CSPS (Health and Social Promotion Center). Catherine has almost 7 years of experience and is dedicated to improving access to care, particularly for women and children. 

 Catherine received training in community-integrated management of childhood illness (IMCI) by Living Goods. This training has significantly expanded her skills. Now, Catherine provides care for children aged 2 months to 5 years, addressing conditions such as malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia, and offering pregnancy follow-up and family planning.

Catherine efficiently uses the MOH digital tools, ensuring precise dosages and accuracy in diagnosis. She highlights the transformative impact of technology, stating, “Before the use of smartphones, approximations in drug dosages were frequent, but now, the phone guides every step of the process, avoiding potential errors.” 

Regular supervision plays a crucial role in motivating Catherine and ensuring effective service delivery. The community recognizes her vital work, extending gratitude beyond healing children. Catherine reflects, “Some people come to my house at any time, even after their child has recovered, to thank me often in tears (of joy); this makes me feel useful.”
