Girls and women in the developing world suffer from lack of adequate solutions to manage menstruation. Imported sanitary pads are prohibitively expensive for low-income families, forcing the vast majority of girls and women to improvise with materials such as grass, leaves, newspapers, and cloth.  Not only are these materials linked to certain reproductive tract infections but they also have limited absorbency and make it difficult for girls to participate in school during their periods. School-age girls commonly miss up to 20% of the school year simply because they cannot access basic sanitary products when they menstruate. The United Nations Children’s Fund estimates that 1 in 10 school-age African girls either skips school during menstruation or drops out entirely because of lack of menstrual hygiene solutions. Through our expansive agent network, Living Goods increases access to sanitary pads and, thanks to economies of scale, we sell them below prevailing market prices.  Our agents sell disposable sanitary pads as well as reusable pads.  Reusable sanitary pads provide affordable, environmentally friendly (washable) menstrual protection at approximately 20% of the total cost of a one-year supply of disposable sanitary napkins.
