Celebrating Health Heroes: Living Goods at the 5th Heroes in Health Awards (HIHA 2024)

On November 15, 2024, Living Goods proudly joined Uganda’s leading health stakeholders in celebrating the 5th Heroes in Health Awards (HIHA) at the picturesque Munyonyo Hotel in Kampala. Organized by the Ministry of Health Uganda with support from Xtraordinary Media, the event revolved around the theme, “Health Workforce Financing to Achieve Universal Health Care Coverage.” This significant occasion recognized individuals, organizations, and programs that are driving transformation in Uganda’s health sector.

The event opened with an inspiring speech by Dr. Henry Mwebesa, Director General of Health Services. He underscored the importance of investing in community health workers (CHWs), calling it a pivotal step toward strengthening community health systems and improving health outcomes across the nation. His remarks aligned perfectly with the event’s theme, spotlighting the urgent need for health workforce financing to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Living Goods, a long-time advocate for community health, was honored to present the day’s first award in the Community Health Worker (Regional) category. This award went to Rose Mary Tani, a dedicated Village Health Team (VHT) volunteer from Moyo Town Council in the Northern Region.

While presenting the award, Living Goods’ Amy Kakiza Rwakihembo celebrated Tani’s exceptional contributions to her community. “Her ability to integrate community case management, family planning, and immunization campaigns has set her apart as a true health hero,” remarked Amy.

This recognition epitomized over 15 years of Living Goods’ efforts to advance community health access. Through our support of VHTs across Uganda, we’ve equipped them with digital tools, training, and resources, enabling them to deliver high-quality healthcare services.

The event also featured remarks from the Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, who highlighted the transformative power of honoring health heroes. She noted that such recognitions not only motivate health workers but also affirm the government’s commitment to achieving UHC. Dr. Aceng thanked healthcare financing partners for empowering Uganda’s health workforce, from community health workers to policymakers, reinforcing the country’s health system.
