In the bustling town of Ganwoko, Manga district in Burkina Faso Community Health Worker (CHW) Ilboudo Marieta remembers a day that highlights the importance of her role. On her way to the market, she encountered Mrs. Tondé and her four-year-old daughter, Hayane. The mother, visibly distressed, explained that Hayane had been battling a stubborn cold.
Without delay, Marieta returned home to grab her consultation kit, which included a register, a smartphone, and essential medications. Using the eCHIS app on her smartphone, Marieta confirmed a diagnosis of pneumonia and prescribed the correct treatment: two tablets twice daily. She provided the necessary medication and clear instructions.
Days later, during a supervision visit with a Living Goods supervisor, Marieta was delighted to see Hayane’s health had greatly improved. “If her symptoms had persisted, I would have referred her to the Health and Social Promotion Center (CSPS),” Marieta explained, embodying the dedication that defines her work.
Mrs. Tondé expressed heartfelt gratitude: “Thanks to Marieta’s care, my daughter is healthy again.”
Marieta’s impact doesn’t stop there. This month alone, she has treated 14 children for conditions including diarrhea, malaria, and pneumonia. She also provides prenatal care to eight pregnant women, ensuring successful deliveries and healthier outcomes.
Her efforts, supported by innovative programs like those of Living Goods, reflect the growing trust between CHWs and their communities. Continuous training and digital tools enable Marieta to deliver life-saving care with efficiency and professionalism.
“Families trust us now,” she says proudly. “That trust is driving real improvements in community health.”
