In the stillness of a March night in Teso North Sub-County, a quiet act of heroism unfolded—an act that showcased the lifesaving power of mobility and the unwavering commitment of community health workers.
The silence was broken by an urgent knock at the door of Phaustine Omasete, a dedicated Community Health Promoter (CHP) serving the Katotoi Community Unit. Standing before him was a young couple, visibly distressed. The woman, just 22 years old, had suffered a miscarriage two weeks earlier and was now experiencing severe bleeding. They had no means of reaching the nearest health facility.
Phaustine quickly assessed the gravity of the situation. After providing initial counselling and determining the emergency, he referred them to Ang’urai Health Centre. In that moment, what could have been a dire and tragic scenario was transformed by a simple, life-changing tool.

Just weeks prior, Phaustine received a Buffalo Bicycle, part of an initiative by the County Government of Busia, in partnership with Living Goods and World Bicycle Relief. That very bicycle became a chariot of hope. The woman’s husband, now empowered with the means to act, used it to transport his wife swiftly to the health centre.
There, she received urgent care. The bleeding was controlled, and by the early hours of the morning, the couple returned home grateful, safe, and deeply moved by the speed and compassion of the response they had received.
For Phaustine, who serves 114 households, this moment reinforced just how critical mobility is to his work. No longer constrained by long distances or lack of transport, he could respond rapidly and effectively when lives hung in the balance.
This story is a powerful reminder that even modest investments like providing CHPs with reliable bicycles can yield profound returns. Every minute counts in rural and underserved communities, where health facilities are often far and few. The gift of mobility can mean the difference between life and death.
Thanks to the foresight of those who understand the value of equipping frontline health workers with essential tools, the Buffalo Bicycle is more than just a means of transport. It is a symbol of hope, a vehicle of impact, and a tool of transformation in the hands of devoted health champions like Phaustine.
