Karim Bukhadurov from Great.com interviewed Living Goods as part of their ‘Great.com Talks With…’ podcast. This series is an antidote to negative news stories that aims to shed light on organizations and experts whose work is making a positive impact on the world.
Community healthcare workers massively reduce the strain on doctors
In Uganda, those who need medical help often struggle to find it. The Pearl of Africa has just one doctor per 25 thousands patients. Jennifer Hyman discussed how Living Goods is increasing access to healthcare in the developing world. By harnessing technology and people power, we can help dramatically improve the healthcare system in countries like Uganda.
Living Goods supplements the work of local governments by supporting community health workers. These aren’t fully-fledged doctors, but they are trained to offer a range of vital frontline medical assistance. This spans family planning, malaria prevention and diarrhoea treatment. Jennifer explained that Living Goods focuses on digital empowerment. This means equipping health workers with smartphones and apps like Smart Health so that they can deliver high quality, data-driven and consistent care under supervision. The organization also makes sure that health workers are paid a fair wage for strengthening their national health sector.
